Spondylolisthesis
Spondylolisthesis describes the slippage of a vertebra, typically in the lower back, which leads the bone to become displaced and begin to press on the vertebra below. Unlike a herniated disc — which affects the cushioned discs between vertebrae — spondylolisthesis is related to the bones themselves.

Common Symptoms of Spondylolisthesis
- Low back pain
- Muscle spasms
- Discomfort when walking or running
- Spinal stiffness
- Inward curvature of the spine
- Leg pain or weakness
- Tight hamstrings
- Tingling sensations
- Radiating pain patterns
Spondylolisthesis Types
Spondylolisthesis is classified into six types based on its cause:
- Congenital – Present from birth due to abnormal vertebral alignment
- Isthmic – Caused by a fracture or defect in a small section of the spine
- Degenerative – The most common form, caused by natural wear and tear on the joints of the spine
- Traumatic – Resulting from an injury or trauma to the spine
- Pathological – Caused by disease affecting bone strength
- Post-surgical – Occurring after spinal surgery
Spondylolisthesis Grades
The severity of slippage is measured in four grades:
- Grade I – 1–25% slippage
- Grade II – 26–50% slippage
- Grade III – 51–75% slippage
- Grade IV – 76–100% slippage
Treatment Options
Conservative treatments are typically recommended first and may include rest, physical therapy, and medications. For lower-grade cases, these approaches are often effective in managing symptoms and improving quality of life.
If conservative care does not provide adequate relief, surgical options may be considered to stabilize the spine and address the underlying slippage.
