Hand & Wrist

Even when other parts of the body are at rest, the hands are often busy. Hands are so vital to even the most basic activities of daily living. Their delicate bone structure and network of nerves make them vulnerable to debilitating injuries, sprains, and other painful conditions.

Midwest Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal Alliance provides hand injury treatments for trauma to the bones, joints, tendons and nerves. When your hand pain is a result of arthritis, nerve compression syndromes, tumors or congenital conditions, reconstructive care using a wide range of surgical procedures is available.

If you have lingering or severe hand pain, request an appointment with one of our orthopedic specialists located in Milwaukee or Southeastern Wisconsin. A dedicated hand pain specialist will work to diagnose your injury and discuss a comprehensive treatment plan.

Hand & Wrist Conditions We Treat

Our hand and wrist specialists diagnose and treat the full range of conditions and injuries affecting the hand and wrist, creating a personalized plan to relieve your pain and restore function.

Other Hand & Wrist Conditions

Hand & Wrist Arthritis

Arthritis of the hand and wrist develops when the cartilage that cushions the small joints wears down or becomes inflamed, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced grip strength. It may stem from age-related wear, a prior injury, or an inflammatory condition such as rheumatoid arthritis. Treatment typically begins with splinting, anti-inflammatory measures, and hand therapy, with injections or surgery considered for advanced cases.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis of the hand and wrist is inflammation of one of the tendons that move the fingers, thumb, or wrist, most often caused by repetitive motion or overuse. It typically causes pain, tenderness, and swelling that worsen with gripping or repetitive activity. Most cases improve with rest, splinting, anti-inflammatory measures, and hand therapy, with injections or surgery reserved for persistent symptoms.

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a painful inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist, often aggravated by repetitive gripping, lifting, or wringing motions. It typically causes pain and swelling near the base of the thumb that worsens with movement. Treatment usually begins with splinting, activity modification, and anti-inflammatory measures or injections, with surgery considered when conservative care does not provide relief.

Ganglion Cysts

A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled lump that most commonly forms on the back or front of the wrist, arising from a joint or tendon sheath. These cysts are usually harmless but can cause aching, weakness, or interference with movement depending on their size and location. Many resolve on their own or with observation, while bothersome cysts may be treated with aspiration or surgical removal.

Hand & Wrist Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure in which a small camera is inserted through tiny incisions to diagnose and treat problems inside the wrist or hand joints. It allows our surgeons to address cartilage damage, ligament tears, and other issues with less disruption to the surrounding tissue. Compared with open surgery, arthroscopy often means smaller scars, less pain, and a faster recovery.

Joint Replacement

Joint replacement of the hand or wrist replaces a damaged joint — often at the base of the thumb or in the finger joints — with an implant designed to restore comfortable motion. It may be an option for advanced arthritis or joint damage that no longer responds to conservative care. The goal is to relieve pain while preserving as much function and dexterity as possible.

Biologics

Biologic treatments use the body’s own healing properties — including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy — to reduce inflammation and support tissue repair in the hand and wrist. These minimally invasive options may help with conditions such as arthritis and tendon injuries, either on their own or alongside traditional care. Our specialists will help determine whether biologic therapy is appropriate for your condition and goals.

Comprehensive Hand & Wrist Treatment

Hand and wrist pain is commonly diagnosed on careful physical examination alone, though X-rays, electrical studies, and diagnostic arthroscopy may also be needed to pinpoint the source of your pain. Midwest Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal Alliance offers a full range of conservative and surgical treatments tailored to your diagnosis.
