Degenerative Disc Disease
What is degenerative disc disease?
Degenerative disc disease is actually not a disease at all, but rather, is a condition that consists of symptoms of back or neck pain caused by natural wear and tear of the spine over time. The two primary contributing factors are inflammation and abnormal micro-motion instability between the vertebrae.

Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease
The most common symptom of degenerative disc disease is chronic low-grade pain radiating from the degenerating disc. Patients may occasionally experience sudden bursts of more severe, debilitating pain. Some patients also experience sensations of the neck or back giving out, with the spine temporarily locking up before returning to normal.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a review of your medical history, a physical examination, and imaging tests to assess the condition of your spine and identify the source of your pain.
Treatment Options
Minor pain management treatments will usually only provide temporary relief as the condition progresses. Treatment options range from conservative care to surgical intervention depending on the severity of your condition.
Non-Surgical Treatment
- Cold treatments for inflammation reduction
- Heat therapy for muscle spasms
- Over-the-counter pain medications (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, naproxen, aspirin)
- Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) units
- Chiropractic manipulation
- Steroid injections
Surgical Treatment
- Spinal fusion
- Artificial disc replacement
