Other Spine & Neck Conditions
Spinal Arthritis
Arthritis of the spine, including facet joint arthritis and osteoarthritis, develops as the cartilage that cushions the small joints of the neck and back gradually wears down. This can lead to stiffness, aching, and reduced range of motion that often worsens with activity or toward the end of the day. Treatment usually begins with physical therapy, anti-inflammatory measures, and injections, with surgery reserved for cases that don’t respond to conservative care.
Artificial Disc Replacement
Artificial disc replacement is a motion-preserving alternative to spinal fusion in which a damaged disc in the neck or lower back is replaced with an implant designed to maintain natural movement. It may be an option for select patients with disc degeneration who have not found relief through conservative treatment. By preserving motion at the treated level, this approach can reduce stress on neighboring discs and support a quicker return to activity.
Lordosis
Lordosis is an exaggerated inward curve of the spine, most often in the lower back, that can affect posture and place added strain on the surrounding muscles and joints. It may be present from a young age or develop over time due to factors such as obesity, osteoporosis, or other spinal conditions. Many cases are managed with physical therapy and posture training, while more significant curves may require treatment of the underlying cause.
Lumbar Strain
A lumbar strain is an injury to the muscles or tendons of the lower back, often caused by heavy lifting, sudden movements, or overuse. It typically causes localized pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms that can make bending or standing uncomfortable. Most lumbar strains improve with rest, ice or heat, activity modification, and physical therapy to restore strength and flexibility.
Spinal Fusion for SI Joint Pain
Located in the pelvis, the sacroiliac joint (SI joint) links the pelvis to the lowest part of your spine above the tailbone. It’s essential for absorbing shock and preventing force from reaching the spine. Just like any other joint in the body, it can be injured or become degenerative—leading to pain in the lower back, buttock, and legs.
As soon as SI joint pain is diagnosed, your Midwest Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal Alliance physician may recommend physical therapy, injection therapy, medication, or minimally invasive spinal fusion.
