Treatment for Sciatica

Sciatica is a painful condition that is sourced along your sciatic nerve, which stretches from the lower back, through your hips and buttocks and leads into each of your legs. Most people with sciatica only experience the symptoms on one side of the body.

While different people may experience different levels of pain, most people characterize the pain as sharp jolts, a burning feeling, or an electric shock. Typically, this condition is caused by a herniated disk, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine), or a bone spur on your spine.

Although sciatica pain can be severe, most issues can be resolved in just a few weeks without procedures.

What are the symptoms?

  • A fuzzy pins-and-needles sensation in legs, toes, or feet
  • Medium to high pain in lower back, buttock, and leg
  • Pain worsening with movement
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Numbness or weakness in lower back, buttock, leg, or foot

How is sciatica diagnosed?

Your provider may diagnose sciatica through a physical examination, during which they will test your muscle strength and reflexes. Imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans may also be ordered to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms, such as a herniated disk or bone spur.
