What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a condition that causes the spine to bend sideways and occurs most often during a child’s growth spurt just before puberty begins. While scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis is unknown.

What can cause scoliosis?
In most cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown (idiopathic). Known causes can include neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy, birth defects affecting spinal bone development, and prior spine injuries or infections.
What are the treatment options for scoliosis?
Treatment depends on the severity of your spine’s curvature, your age, the type of scoliosis, the degree of curvature, and your growth potential.
Bracing
Bracing does not cure scoliosis or reverse the curve, but it aims to prevent the curvature from increasing. Braces are recommended to be worn 16 to 24 hours a day and are typically used until the patient stops growing.
Surgery
Surgery is typically recommended for curves exceeding 40 degrees. The most common procedure is spinal fusion, which uses rods and screws to stabilize the spine. For children who are still growing, adjustable rods may be used and periodically lengthened as the child grows.
